Roswell ’98: Roadway

For awhile the lack of road on my table has kind of bothered me. Not that any of the rulesets that I have for my Roswell ’98 Post Apocalyptic games require roads, but it just seemed odd to me to have buildings out in the desert with no road to get to them. Even for something like Gaslands, it seems weird that cars would just drive around randomly in the unpaved desert without broken axels and flat tires everywhere. I mean, even the Mad Max movies pretty much have the vehicles on roads of some sort for the most part.

With my Roswell ’98 setting using 1:72 models and 1:64 cars, I was thinking that road from HO scale designed for trains would work, but they were too small. Going to O scale, I found the above which is a neoprene strip of road of about 3ft length.

The neoprene road has folds in it from how it’s packaged and sold, but it’s actually like a big sticker with an adhesive back. Of course, I’m not going to adhere the road to my gaming mat, but I still couldn’t just leave it as is, so I decided I’d cut it up and stick to 1mm plasticard. This also gave me a little shoulder on the sides of the road to blend it in a little more with my table.

My post apoc mat is 4ft long, longer than the amount of road I have. So, before buying a second set, I decided to make a few “end caps” as it were where the road has maybe been broken away and covered by the desert or simply destroyed by some area destruction. Paved road appears again usable a little down the way. I also cut into it a few cracks and potholes of sorts. Again, my games don’t really _need_ roads, this is just more for a visual aesthetic.

Now a Roswell billboard and a gas station make a little more sense on the table.

I can’t recommend this road enough. The only tip I have is that you can stick the neoprene road on plastic straight up. This is a strong glue. I kind of messed up a couple inches where the road folded onto itself. I had to cut it away. Also, I ran a little super glue on the plasticard first. This is totally unnecessary and the glue causes some slight bumping on the road really only seen in person. Anyway, I highly recommend this road set. How do you think it turned out?

  1. Roads are one of those things that only appear on wargaming tables of a certain level of, in the genuine meaning of the word, refinement.

They are visually critical for all sorts, but as they take up essentially zero space in game terms and actually tend to create kill zones that only the foolhardy would cross, they are a mixed bag.

Your roads look great Mr White.
