Gaslands: Obstacles

Playing some games of Gaslands recently, I realized that I needed a few more obstacle types. I determined that I needed markers to represent vehicles that get wrecked, but I also wanted some destructible terrain.

As my Gaslands vehicles have oop models and weapons hanging on and around them, I didn’t feel comfortable setting the cars upside down or on their side when wrecked. I decided I’d just make some cheap wrecks. In true B-movie fashion the cars we use to film driving are not the same we’re blowing up. Hehehe. I didn’t use the $10 Greenlight 1:64 cars for the wrecks, but just some generic looking Matchbox vehicles. I went ahead and used the same base size, so the wrecks retain the same footprint as when they were in action.

Wrecked bikes was a little trickier. I didn’t have spare bikes, so I opted to just go with a few tires. These markers are a bit less thematic, but they do allow a driver to stand on the wreck, per our pedestrian house rules. Like the cars, I used the same size bases as the bikes to retain the same collision footprint for the obstacle.

I have dry tumbleweeds on my Gaslands table, but we’ve only used them for visual appeal. I came across some train cactus packs (maybe HO scale?) and realized I could base some of them for clear collision contact and have some destructible obstacles. Destructible obstacles are unlike rocks and wrecks in that colliding with them will remove them from the game, but a driver will take hazard tokens. For other games, such as Xenos Rampant, these cactuses will serve as scatter terrain as shown above.

The cactuses are a little more vibrant green than maybe the rest of the colors on my table, but they’ll be scattered about a bit, so shouldn’t make the table look too lush. With both of these though, I’ve got all the obstacles I need for future games and won’t have to proxy anymore.

I hoped the wrecks were designed and painted in a way to serve double duty. I want them to play as wrecks in Gaslands, but as scatter terrain in Xenos Rampant. If I modeled fire/smoke on them, like recent wrecks, they’d look better for Gaslands, but might not work for XR. If I added more rust and vegetation, like they’ve been sitting out awhile, they’d look better for XR scatter terrain, but look too stale to be a recent Gaslands wreck.
