Blood Bowl: The Undead

I meant to get this post out at the end of October, but became pre-occupied. Last October, in celebration of “Orktober” I painted up several flavors of green-skin models to make teams for a few different Blood Bowl titles. This year, I did something similar, but for Undead. Maybe a bit more fitting for October.

First up is the seven model strong Necromantic Undead Blitz Bowl team. Like the Shambling Undead BzB squad, this one has seven models as there are seven to the sprue. Most BzB teams are six. I’m not a fan of the Wraith being on a clothesline, so I snipped that off and had it attached to the base via a tombstone. I’m not really a fan of this model in general, but I wanted to use the official team models to match the BzB team card. BzB is a pretty casual game so didn’t wanna cause any confusion with alternate models.

Now, for the actual Necromantic Undead Blood Bowl team in full… I passed on those clothesline wraiths and converted a pair of Myrmourn Banshees. There are only 11 models here, but all the positionals are covered. Any other models needed will be zombies brought over from my Shambling Undead team.

Speaking of the Shambling Undead…I already had the seven model BzB team painted, so went ahead and painted up another sprue to complete the team. Slight conversion on the second Mummy so he’s standing and not sprinting. Another small conversion on the second Wight using legs from one of the skeletons to change his stance. Additionally, this team can run four ghouls, so brought over two from the Necromantic Undead squad. Painting both Shambling and Necromantic Undead in the same colors allows me to port over ghouls and zombies to fill out each roster. In my head canon, they are all part of a sports collective called Vargravia United. Vargravia being a location in the Old World (like all my teams’ home locations).

Well…let’s not forget DungeonBowl. Naturally, these two teams can be combined as options for the College of Death DungeonBowl team. So, all this work netted me four new options for BB universe titles…well maybe six to eight if I count using these teams in Sevens and GutterBowl.

So, why didn’t I get this post done in time for the end of October? I was also prepping myself, and work projects, so I could head down to Chaos Cup 2023 down in Orlando. This was the first year the event has been held in Orlando and cheap flights made it an easy sell. It ended up being the largest Chaos Cup, so largest US BB tournament ever, at 200+ coaches. Additionally, the Friday night before was a 70+ person Sevens tournament which ended up being the largest Sevens tournament ever held in the world. The game is certainly in growth mode.

Between the two I did ok. I took Union Elves to the Sevens tournament and went 1-1-1. Initially, I wasn’t going to play in this event, but the Tournament Organizer was hoping to get all teams represented and was short two…UE and Tomb Kings. I had a painted UE team that I never used, so figured why not. For the two day Chaos Cup proper, I ran the Necromantic side of Vargravia United and shocked myself going 4-1-1 which landed me at 13 out of ~200+. Pretty good. I have a year to live off this high, before next year’s event which’ll crash me back down to reality.

  1. Great work and the green/black is a nice color scheme for Undead teams. Yea, the Wraith model was not the best.
I also got the idea to glue mine onto grave stones from somewhere. I like the alternate models on your Necro team, those work really well as Wraiths.

Congrats on doing so well at Chaos Cup! I’ve never been, but I seem to recall that it was hosted in Chicago before? Do you know why it moved?

    • Thanks. The wraiths went through two or three iterations. One pass was using BB skeleton bits on nighthaunt models, but they ended up looks a little more hokey.

I think Chaos Cup moved from Chicago to Orlando because the Tournament Organizer switch from one individual to another and the new TO lives in Orlando. Additionally, Florida has some how cultivated a large BB scene. Maybe the largest in the country at the moment.
