Dungeon Bowl: Dressing

One of my goals for 2023 is to paint up all the dungeon dressing for the base box of Dungeon Bowl. Last post I showed off some doorways from the classic Warhammer Quest and above we have the WHQ minotaur immortalized in bronze. I felt it fitting to have him as the center of a dungeon’s maze, but I was also able to knock out everything else for my Dungeon Bowl set.

For the bridge room, I picked up a piece from Warcry Catacombs, trimming off some of the edges so the squares around it can still fit BB models.

The dragon is a bit of a cheat as I’ve gone with a pre-painted Polar Ice Dragon from the old Mage Knight range. This model doesn’t have any connection to classic Warhammer Quest or GW dungeon crawling, but about two decades ago I did use a MK Fire Dragon in a Mordheim campaign, so in my gaming background there is a connection between these dragons and GW models. I froze the model in the freezer then popped it off the MK clicky base and made a new one out of plasticard to better fit the four squares it takes up.

I bought some early 90’s Heroquest tombs for the tomb room in DB, but they had cardboard sides. I opted to upgrade to the new Heroquest tombs as they’re full 3d on all sides. Two of these were dead easy to affix to plasticard and paint up.

Last year’s Dungeon Bowl expansion, Death Match, came with rules for a room with Werewolf that could move around the dungeon and attack players. I didn’t really feel like a werewolf was as fitting to an old school Warhammer Quest style dungeon, so I’ve opted to use a squig riding snotling in its place.

All of this fits neatly into the core DB box, which is what I need it to do with my current limited storage. It’s another reason to go with that plastic Mage Knight dragon. It’s thin and with the wings removed, fits in the box. Another option, that I haven’t fully packed away, is to get one of those old-school 80s Citadel dragons. One of the small ones. They’d fit, but for now… this is good.

Above is a sample of one of the setups. It’s not a fully realized, 3D dungeon, but it was never going to be able to be…especially for how infrequently it gets played. Make no mistake, I love the new version of DB, but it doesn’t see the table time that regular BB does, so there’s only so much time and space I’m willing to commit to it. I think if I were to enhance it one more step, I’d get a dungeon tiled mat to set it all on instead of this green one. However, with all the plastic bits that came in the box, and all the dressing I’ve added, being painted up I’m calling this one done.
