Under the Brush: The Time of Elves is Over

If you’ve been reading the blog for any amount of time, you’ll have noticed I’ve been working on a Rivendell army for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game for about 3 years. I was a bit of a late comer to The Hobbit Strategy Battle Game as it was called back then. Though I’ve been a life-long Tolkien fan ever since I first saw The Hobbit cartoon by Rankin Bass. My mind was further blown open when I discovered the sequel The Return of the King. Eventually I read the books and loved the films when they came out. That time period was the Dark Age of Gaming for me, when I wasn’t playing anything. Shortly after The Return of the King came out I got back into board games and I remember seeing the Games Workshop minis in game stores. I kind of rolled my eyes at the time, a licensed version of Warhammer Fantasy, seriously?

Elrond Half-elven, Lord of Rivendell

Many years and several moves later, my wife and I moved our young family to Pittsburgh, where my wife is from. Having left my WSTZ buddies behind in Austin, I was looking for new people to push minis around with. I wasn’t interested in trying more mainstream games like Warhammer 40,000 or Age of Sigmar at the time, so when I saw a guy offering to run demos of the LotR game, I got in contact. I have long been fascinated by the old Games Workshop Historical game Legends of the Old West, and when I learned it was based on the LotR rules, I got even more interested.

Under the Brush: Glorfindel on Asfaloth

mvimg_20200101_124733

Happy New Year! I hope you are all doing well and looking forward to another year of hobbies! I had intended to get this model done to be my last model for 2019, but things didn’t pan out that way, so now it has the honor of being my first model for 2020!

New Citadel Metallics

img_20190621_222632

In all the hubbub about the new Contrast paints, some new colors added to the classic Citadel range have kind of been forgotten about. Some of these are colors that used to be part of the Forge World paint range but have been brought into the Citadel fold. I picked up two (Grey Knight Steel and Iron Warriors) and gave them a shot. Under the Brush: Heirs of Gondolin

Battle Companies 2.0 for the Middle-earth Strategy Game has been out for several weeks now and I’ve already tested it out with my buddy over a couple of games. Since then, in a preparation for a map-based game with a local group, I’ve painted up my starter battle company. I’ll be playing Rivendell, as that’s my main army so far. I present to you, the Heirs of Gondolin! Continue reading

Under the Brush: Gulavhar, Terror of Arnor

gulavhar1

As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve started an Angmar force for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game. There’s a profile that has intrigued me in the Angmar army list for a while and now it has received a big boost in the new edition. And that would be Gulavhar, Terror of Arnor! Continue reading

Middle-earth SBG: An Extended Elven Family

58216_original

Originally I was going to post this as a question to the Great British Hobbit League Facebook group, but it got rather lengthy so I decided to just write a post about it.

As you may know from previous posts I’ve been working on a Rivendell army for the newly rebranded Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game that hit shelves a couple of weeks ago. The new rules and profiles are brilliant and the game features army bonuses and a new ally matrix. There are now three levels of allies, historical (or green) allies retain their army bonuses when playing them together. Rivendell has three green allies: The Fellowship, Numenor and Lothlorien.

Battle of Pelennor Fields Price Leak

38018074_10104209306708018_8430739829582462976_o

Finally the price speculation can end! And we know the drop date!

Just saw this from a guy who works for the FLGS I usually game at. Pre-orders for the new Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game stuff. I don’t think the entire LotR/Hobbit line are going off web exclusive, but at least these items will be.

Battle of Pelennor Fields Boxed Game: $150 USD

Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Rules Manual: $60 USD

Armies of the Lord of the Rings Sourcebook: $60 USD

Warriors of Minas Tirith (24-model box): $40 USD

Knights of Minas tirith: $32 USD

Haradrim Raiders: $32 USD

War Mumak of Harad: $100 USD

Mordor/Isengard Troll: $40 USD

Looks like a good value for the box set, great value for infantry, but cavalry are going up in price a bit and the Mordor Troll and Mumak adjusted probably just to create even prices.

Also posted was this display stand for stores.

Under the Brush: Rethinking some Rivendell conversions

20180602_223637

Last week a package arrived for me full of minis goodness. Ignoring the Spike! Journal, White Dwarfs (White Dwarves) and Shadespire stuff (not completely though, it’s a great game you should try out) you’ll notice Glorfindel and a box of Knights of Rivendell. Finally I have all the parts I need for all the options of a high elves force for Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game. Now I just need to put it all together (and paint it) but it has me rethinking my plans a little.

Catching up on news: UK Games Expo

ukexpo-june1-header22ht

I was out on vacation last week so I’m still catching up on gaming news, but last Friday Games Workshop casually dropped a couple of tidbits for us from the UK Games Expo. Warhammer Community buried the lead but I won’t …
