Terrain: Painting Realistic Stone

IMG_2937

I’ve been sitting on a lot of terrain. In the past I never did much in building or painting terrain, usually relying on others to put up the scenery. Being a naturally slow painter and being burdened with long hours at work, taking the time to paint terrain seemed a luxury. Recently though I have started buying terrain pieces. Mostly components to fit in with Dark Age to Napoleonic eras. Most of these buildings are stone so I wanted to find a system that could easily paint up stone while making it look realistic. Following my usual modus operandi, I scoured the internet to find someone who had the solution.

Blood Bowl: The Wizards

In my games of DungeonBowl, I’ve pretty much made it the norm for each team to have a College Wizard for free. They’re all the same cost, at 100K, so it balances out. Plus, it helps further separate DB from BB proper with each team having a Wizard-Coach. I picked up the Collegiate Arcane – Mystic Battle Wizards box as it comes with enough bits to make four wizard models of multiple college types.

Blitz Bowl: Skaven Team (and College of Shadow DB team!)

I’ve had these models assembled and primed for close to three years now..or whenever it was when the first edition of Blitz Bowl came out. The long delay in getting ’em painted was because they looked a chore to paint, and I wasn’t sure what color scheme I’d go with. Turns out they were pretty easy.

Dungeon Bowl: Dressing

One of my goals for 2023 is to paint up all the dungeon dressing for the base box of Dungeon Bowl. Last post I showed off some doorways from the classic Warhammer Quest and above we have the WHQ minotaur immortalized in bronze. I felt it fitting to have him as the center of a dungeon’s maze, but I was also able to knock out everything else for my Dungeon Bowl set.

Blitz Bowl: Orctober Round Up

This month I took advantage of the Orctober theme to finish painting up any outstanding, unpainted orc, goblin, or troll models. Oddly enough all of my models in this category are part of my Blitz Bowl collection. I have a troll in-flight to the house, so he didn’t make the Orctober cut, but let’s see who got suited up this month…

Blitz Bowl: The Khorne Team

In early September, I decided I’d take the new Khorne Team to Chaos Cup (a post on that team is forthcoming). While doing that team, I went ahead and worked on a Blitz Bowl (BzB) team at the same team. Spoiler alert…they don’t use the same team colors. The BzB Khorne Team is essentially a separate project. Why’d I go with different colors? And what’s with those red skin tones? Read on…

Sneak Peek: Gore Ball Ogre

goreball

Not too long ago we mentioned the Kickstarter launch of the Gore Ball Ogre team on the site.  The Kickstater from Word Forge Games offered up a rather impressive collection of single piece resin cast models and as the campaign progressed it grew to include a large variety of greenskins too.  I was impressed with the designs of the ogres offering a variety of different poses and looks, but having already a full ogre team on standby I couldn’t pull the trigger on the full set.  Yet the allure of the new was too much, and I could not resist the hockey mask look and went ahead and ordered one.  Now Mike is working on a full review of the entire set, but as he’s recovering from the installation of his cyber-leg I’m given a chance to offer my quick opinion of my newest recruit.
