Age of Sigmar – Bloodskins of the Iron Keep

Bloodskins of the Iron Keep

Early in 2017, I picked up a copy of Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower…and began my relationship with Games Workshop’s Age of Sigmar setting. I was initially put off of Age of Sigmar after the destruction of the beloved Old World, but have became a bigger fan of this new setting than I was of the former one. It seemed some of my enthusiasm splashed onto my son as he got the bug as well and wanted to paint up some Stormcast. A buddy hooked us up on a fantastic deal on an AoS Starter set with the Stormcast side mostly painted. My son was in luck!

I, however, needed to get to work.

Under the hobby knife: Planning conversions for The Hobbit SBG

giphy-5

Last year I was introduced to the Hobbit Strategy Battle Game, formerly the Lord of the Rings, but don’t worry even though it’s called the Hobbit Strategy Battle Game (or SBG for short) it still encompasses factions and miniatures from across both eras of Middle-earth. In fact, the game will be rebranded the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game later this year (but that’s kind of another discussion). Middle-earth is my favorite fantasy setting and has been a big passion for various parts of my life. I had kind of forgotten how much I loved Tolkien’s world until I started getting into the Hobbit SBG. I found myself attracted first to the Rivendell/high elf faction. When I was younger, I loved all things dwarf, but nowadays I’m all about the elves. I’ve always thought Elrond was a cool character and Rivendell seemed like a pretty cool place to chill, plus, who doesn’t love this scene from the intro to Fellowship of the Ring?

Under the Brush: Cleavedhead Barrows Pt. 2

ClevelandBrownsElfSo word must have gotten out at work that I had a few minutes of spare time in the evening as it seems since my last update my work load has been grown exponentially.  Despite the lame hours away from home and family I have been slowly chipping away at my undead team and have a status update for everybody. December Blood Bowl Releases – Part 1

For a while now, Games Workshop has been teasing us with images of the Elven Union team, and a new pitch to match. Andy Hoare even said several times that the team would be out by Christmas, so I was not surprised a few weeks ago when I heard that Blood Bowl pre-orders were about to be released. Once I saw the list, however, I was actually surprised by several things. I didn’t expect the Human and Orc team card packs, the hard backed Blood Bowl Almanac, nor the new Goblin pitch. Honestly, I had even forgotten about the reports that the Blood on the Snow pitch would be available again this Holiday Season. Once I saw the full list, I simply sighed and started rounding up things to put on Craigslist and eBay so that I could pay for them… Being a completionist is never easy, or cheap.

Under the Brush: Chaos Renegades update

IMG_3974 copy

I’ve been working on painting up my Chaos Renegades team off and on over the past couple of months and I’m slowly reaching the finish line. For the color choice I wanted some Tzeentch-y as he’s my favorite of the chaos gods (although I was really tempted by the 5th god Malaal but figured the reference was too obscure). I wanted to avoid yellow and blue as I didn’t want the team to look like the Reikland Reavers color scheme, but I did end up going with a pale gold, blue and turquoise look. I hope the Changer of Ways approves.

A Return to the Underhive!

About 150 years ago, sometime around 1996 or 1997, some friends introduced me to a couple of games that would have a big impact on how I viewed gaming. The first was a little game called Blood Bowl. The second was Necromunda. I remember being blown away by the concept, the setting, the minis, and all the cardboard terrain that they managed to cram into the box. Blood Bowl may have prompted my first attempt at painting minis using real painting techniques, but Necromunda inspired me to my first attempts at building terrain, and that quickly became my favorite part of the hobby. Not long after, I moved to another city and lost touch with any groups that were actively playing Necromunda. The game got put on the back burner for me, but I held on to my Delaque gang knowing that I would paint them and play the game again one day.

Warhammer Shadespire – Converting the Warbands

I read it once that “Faces and Bases make minis look Aces”. I believe this is certainly true. A decent base can ground the model and give it that finished polish. The eye is naturally drawn to a model’s head and anything off there is the first thing noticed…and it’s easy to go wrong. Luckily for me then, I have a long history of favoring characters with covered faces.

Warhammer Shadespire – Terrain

With Games Workshop’s recently release of their competitive arena battle game, Shadespire, many players have looked for ideas on how to add a bit of flair to their adventures in the Mirrored City. We still have a large back catalog of proper minis to paint, so in the meantime, we’ve opted to go back about 15 years for a product that fits our current gaming needs.

Gore Ball Ogre Team Unboxing

A few months ago, I wrote about a Kickstarter campaign that had caught my eye. The campaign was run by Word Forge Games, and it was for an Ogre team for their game, Gore Ball. At the time I was unfamiliar with Word Forge Games and Gore Ball, but I really liked their Ogre minis as their aesthetic fit in with the new Games Workshop Blood Bowl Ogre almost perfectly. After my initial post about the Kickstarter campaign I reached out to Word Forge Games and they very graciously agreed to send me a copy of the Ogre team for review. Now, several months later, a box from the UK has shown up at my door, and it’s time for another unboxing!
