Let’s Talk About Gaming Mats

I want to start this post with the following disclaimer: I am pretty new to gaming mats. I have used a couple of custom printed neoprene Blood Bowl pitches over the years, but that is about the limit of my experience. I have technically owned a couple of Mantic Games mats for Deadzone for about a year or so, but since I have yet to actually play Deadzone, all I have managed to use them for is as a backdrop for taking pictures of miniatures. Well, it’s officially time for that to change! Deep-Cut Studio has graciously agreed to send us one of their Space Hulk gaming mats for review, so here we go!

Neoprene Blood Bowl Pitches Have Arrived!

That’s right… After two false starts, the first two official neoprene for Blood Bowl are finally here. First we had an advertisement in an issue of White Dwarf stating that at the time of the release of the issue, the Reikland Reavers neoprene pitch would be already available for order, only to find no pitch available for order, and the advert removed from the digital edition of White Dwarf. Then, months later, we had the Gouged Eye pitch that actually went up for pre-order, only to have all open orders cancelled a week later.

In both cases, Games Workshop would officially cite quality control issues as the reason the pitches got pulled. Whatever the issues were, they have apparently been resolved because not only did both pitches go on pre-order again, both pitches were even delivered to my doorstep today! Oh… and I also received the Underworld Denizens Coins & Tokens pack…

Under the Brush: Ep 1

Today marks the start of a new and (hopefully) ongoing section of Wyrd Stones and Tackle Zones. It’s called Under the Brush, and it will focus on what minis and/or terrain we are currently painting. For me, personally, I am hoping that it writing about what I am currently working will help me keep my motivation and focus for miniature painting. The idea is to write multiple posts as I progress with painting the minis I currently have on the table. We’ll see how this all pans out for me… Well, with the clever (I guess that’s debatable) intro out of the way, let’s take a look at what is Under the Brush!

It’s BAAAACK!

A couple of weeks ago speculation started to run wild when a small image from taken from this month’s White Dwarf magazine started making the rounds across the interwebs. That image (shown below) was a from a reader’s question asking if Necromunda was going to be making a return considering the success of Shadow War: Armageddon. The response was a teasing, “well, check back next month for some news…” Some thought this was only a reference to the upcoming Necromunda video game, but others dared to hope that this signaled the re-release of one of the more beloved games of the Games Workshop Specialist Games era. Well, today it is official… The Wahammer Community page has posted confirmation that Necromunda is officially coming back!

What’s Old is New Again

Well, another day, another box on my doorstep from Games Workshop. Today’s unboxing is the result of Games Workshop’s most recent Blood Bowl Made to Order releases. Now, the cynical view of the Made to Order program is that Games Workshop is profiting off of our nostalgia for older minis that we drooled over as we first learned to play the games we love. I don’t completely disagree with that view, but I also look at it as Games Workshop giving us what we want… which is the older minis that we drooled over as we first learned to play the games we love. They are also doing it at a (mostly) reasonable price. $54 US for a twelve mini metal Blood Bowl team is right about the same price that these minis were the last time they were available at retail about ten years ago. Honestly, when I first heard about the Made to Order program, I was worried that the teams would be marked at closer to double that price. The single minis like the Big Guys are not quite as much of a “bargain” as the teams, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Gaming Accessory: Advanced Terrain

“Wargame terrain so tough, you’ll be passing it down to your children.”

My son has recently graduated from Heroscape to Age of Sigmar selling off all his Heroscape to bankroll the Age of Sigmar starter set (as well as a Nintendo Switch). What this means is that we now needed a whole new set of terrain for this new game. Our storage space is fairly limited so we needed something that could be stored in a small space, which likely means the scenery bits would need to be on top of each other. Additionally, we still have little sister who also likes to play with minis having done so for years with that Heroscape set. Add these two together, and we needed easy to store, durable terrain. Games Workshop’s hard plastic with small bits and details wouldn’t do.

Enter….Advanced Terrain.

Glart Smashrip is in the Building

A few days ago, yet another box from Forge World showed up at the house. In the box was one FAT RAT in the form of Glart Smashrip. Glart is the newest Star Player for 6th edition Blood Bowl, and he makes for a pretty imposing rat on the pitch. His bulk adds some much needed muscle to the Skaven team.

New Blood Bowl Dice are Here! And They are STILL IN STOCK!

Recently a rumor surfaced that new sets of Blood Bowl dice were on the way, and other Blood Bowl items that had been long out of stock were making a return. Then last Saturday, pre-orders went up on the Games Workshop site for for new sets of dice for the Reikland Reavers, the Gouged Eye, the Skavenblight Scramblers, and the oddly generic, “Goblin Team.” Having been lucky enough to get one of the two sets allotted to my FLGS at launch, I skipped the Skavenblight Scramblers dice, but I did order one set of each of the new dice. Well, six days later, and one day before their official release, my new dice showed up in my mailbox.

Block Mania – Mobs, Kelggs, and Fatties… Oh My!

When James texted me a couple of nights ago and asked me if I wanted to have a game night, my answer was a simple, “always!” When he asked me what I wanted to play, I decided to suggest a game that we haven’t played in a LONG time. I suggested the 1987 Games Workshop boardgame, Block Mania. As the box says in the lower left hand corner, Block Mania is, “a 2000 AD Judge Dredd Boardgame.” Block Mania is a skirmish game between rival housing blocks of Mega-City 1, fighting to destroy their neighbor’s block.
